Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) Isolated from an Arid Soil in Saudi Arabia Improve Maize Growth

The rhizosphere represents the main source of bacteria commonly referred to as rhizobacteria. Such beneficial rhizobacteria with plant-beneficial activities are generally defined as plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of native rhizobacteria (PGPR) isolated from an arid soil of date palm in Al-Qassim region, Saudi Arabia, to enhance plants growth. Maize (Zea mays L.) was used as model crop for this research. Maize seedlings roots were inoculated with Bacillus and Enterobacter bacteria. The seedlings showed significant increases in stem, leaf, and root growth. The maximal shoot lengths were obtained with strain (I2: Bacillus cereus) (95.41 cm) with an increase of 33.45 % compared to uninoculated control seedlings. The three isolates I2: Bacillus cereus, AZS2: Bacillus subtilis and commercial strain AZB: Azospirillum brasilense) caused a highly significant increase in the total number of leaves ranging from 10.9% to 12.7% compared to the uninoculated controls. Seedlings inoculated with AZS2: Bacillus subtilis strain exhibited the highest aerial dry biomasses with an improvement of more than 85 % (30.76 g) compared with uninoculated control plants and more than 62 % compared to uninoculated NaCl control plants. The inoculation treatment with I2: Bacillus cereus strain induced an improvement of more than 65 % (27.44 g) over uninoculated control and more than 45 % over uninoculated NaCl control. The strain AZS2: Bacillus subtilis produced the highest root dry weights, in comparison to other isolates and induced an improvement of 30.17% (26.06 g) compared to uninoculated control plants and 24.09% compared to uninoculated plants (NaCl control).The most effective rhizobacterial treatment in the dry biomasses of whole seedling (aerial dry biomass and root dry biomass) is AZS2: Bacillus subtilis strain which induced an improvement of 55% (56.83 g) compared to uninoculated plants and 42% compared to uninoculated plants (NaCl-control)...

Enhancing nutrient uptake and grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) growth through soil application of beneficial bacteria (Bacillus spp.)

The term plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) refers to a root-associated bacteria that possesses several benefits for soil and the plant. The increasing demand for sustainable food production necessitates a shift towards agricultural practices that mitigate adverse environmental impacts. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has raised concerns, prompting a surge of interest in harnessing the potential of beneficial soil microorganisms, particularly plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria. This study explores the impact of soil inoculation with PGPR treatments on grapefruit seedlings, including a commercial strain of Bacillus velezensis, a fresh inoculum of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, a mixture of three selected citrus endophytic Bacillus spp. isolates, inorganic fertilizers, and combinations thereof. The aim was to test their ability to enhance growth and nutrient uptake reducing the input of chemical fertilization. Results indicated that the combination of Bacillus velezensis and inorganic fertilization significantly improved soil nutrient availability and enhanced plant growth, surpassing both negative (water) and positive (inorganic fertilization) controls. Shoot and root system biomass showed significant increases from Bacillus velezensis plus inorganic fertilization compared to other treatments. These findings provide insights into management methods that can reduce chemical inputs while promoting plant productivity. The demonstrated benefits of PGPR on grapefruit seedlings highlight a promising approach for future research and applications in sustainable citrus cultivation.

Identifying receptor-like kinases that enable Caulobacter RHG1 to promote plant growth in Arabidopsis thaliana

ABSTRACT Plants express an array of receptor-like kinases (RLKs) to control development and communicate with their environment. Many RLKs are uncharacterized and some of them are expected to regulate plant responses to plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Despite documented effects induced by Caulobacter RHG1, the underlying signaling pathways and the involved RLKs remain uncharted. Through a targeted RLK mutant screening, we aimed to decipher the receptors that steer the Caulobacter RHG1-induced growth promotion in Arabidopsis thaliana. We identified four RLKs that are pivotal in the RHG1-Arabidopsis interaction, including the coreceptors SOMATIC EMBRYOGENESIS RECEPTOR-LIKE KINASE 1 (SERK1) and BRASSINOSTEROID INSENSITIVE 1-ASSOCIATED KINASE 1 (BAK1/SERK3), which act redundantly in the RHG1-Arabidopsis interaction, possibly by interplaying with the unknown RLK AT3G28040 and the immunity-related ELONGATION FACTOR-TU RECEPTOR (EFR). These results shed new light on the molecular dynamics orchestrating plant responses to PGPR, and concurrently contribute a crucial piece to the intricate puzzle of RLK interactions. Key policy highlights Four RLKs; BAK1, SERK1, EFR, and AT3G28040 (RRHG) are involved in the RHG1-Arabidopsis interaction. BAK1 and SERK1, two well-described co-receptors, act redundantly and play a pivotal role in the RHG1-driven growth promotion, possibly by interplaying with the unknown RLK AT3G28040 and the immunity-related RLK EFR. Most known development – and immunity-related RLKs barely influence RHG1-driven plant growth promotion in Arabidopsis.

NanoBiofertilizer and its Application in Sustainable Agriculture, Crop Specific Nutrients Delivery and Environmental Sustainability: A Review

Probiotic bacteria are increasingly in demand in the food and feed industries. A growing population and finite resources require efficient ways to maximize yields. Probiotic bacteria are gaining popularity in the food and feed industries due to their unique combination of benefits and values, which include consumer health interests, sustainability values, food innovation, and potential business opportunities. The use of conventional fertilizers can increase crop production but can also cause runoff and toxicity issues. A nanobiofertilizer offers improved crop nutrition and reduces application rates. Slow-release properties minimize environmental losses while nanoscale particle size enhances nutrient absorption. If nanobiofertilizers are closely regulated, they can boost yields without destroying the soil and aquatic ecosystems. In recent years, nanobiofertilizers have received considerable attention. Plant extracts and microbes are used in green synthesis to produce eco-friendly nanoparticles. Crop-specific nutrient release can be tailored using modified nanoparticle surfaces. Controlled nutrient delivery is achieved by smart nanocarrier systems that adapt to changing soil moisture, pH, and microbial activity. Combined applications of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria have been reported that they can enhance crop growth in synergy. This review presents an overview of the most recent studies on nanobiofertilizers, as well as the issues connected with their environmental implications, safety, and regulation, presenting a roadmap for the responsible use of nanobiofertilizers, which aims to enhance food security while protecting the environment for future generations.

Serratia plymuthica HK9-3 enhances tomato resistance against Phytophthora capsici by modulating antioxidant defense systems and rhizosphere micro-ecological condition.

Tomatoes are frequently challenged by various pathogens, among which Phytophthora capsici (P. capsici) is a destructive soil-borne pathogen that seriously threatens the safe production of tomatoes. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) positively induced plant resistance against multiple pathogens. However, little is known about the role and regulatory mechanism of PGPR in tomato resistance to P. capsici. Here, we identified a new strain Serratia plymuthica (S. plymuthica), HK9-3, which has a significant antibacterial effect on P. capsici infection. Meanwhile, stable colonization in roots by HK9-3, even under P. capsici infection, improved tomato growth parameters, root system architecture, photosynthetic capacity, and boosted biomass. Importantly, HK9-3 colonization significantly alleviated the damage caused by P. capsici infection through enhancing ROS scavenger ability and inducing antioxidant defense system and pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins in leaves, as evidenced by elevating the activities of peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and chitinase, β-1,3-glucanase, and increasing the transcripts of POD, SOD, CAT, APX1, PAL1, PAL2, PAL5, PPO2, CHI17 and β-1,3-glucanase genes. Notably, HK9-3 colonization not only effectively improved soil microecology and soil fertility, but also significantly enhanced fruit yield by 44.6% and improved quality. Our study presents HK9-3 as a promising and effective solution for controlling P. capsici infection in tomato cultivation while simultaneously promoting plant growth and increasing yield, which may have implications for P. capsici control in vegetable production.

Synergistic interaction of Piriformospora indica and microbial inoculants on symbiotic potential, plant nutrition and productivity of chickpea (Cicer arietinum)

The present study was carried out during the winter season of 2011–12 and 2012–13 at Indian Agricultural Re search Institute, New Delhi, to evaluate the efficacy of microbial bioinoculants in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) us ing combinatorial approach. A group of microbial inoculants (Mesorhizobium ciceri). Phosphate-solubilizing micro organisms and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria) in presence and absence of P fertilizer was used to testify its synergistic effect with Piriformospora indica on symbiotic traits, growth and yield of chickpea under field condi tions. Significant differences were observed with respect to symbiotic potential and other associated parameters with combined inoculation. Inoculation with Mesorhizobium ciceri enhanced nitrogenase activity and leghemoglobin content significantly over un-inoculated control. Significant improvement in N and P nutrition with combined inoculation amended with 30 kg P/ha emphasized the beneficial effect of these and similar trend was reflected in productivity enhancement as well.

Bacillus velezensis YXDHD1-7 Prevents Early Blight Disease by Promoting Growth and Enhancing Defense Enzyme Activities in Tomato Plants

Bacillus velezensis is well known as a plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and biocontrol agent. Nevertheless, there are very few reports on the study of B. velezensis on tomato early blight, especially the biocontrol effects among different inoculation concentrations. In this study, an IAA-producing strain, Bacillus velezensis YXDHD1-7 was isolated from the tomato rhizosphere soil, which had the strongest inhibitory effect against Alternaria solani. Inoculation with bacterial suspensions of this strain promoted the growth of tomato seedlings effectively. Furthermore, inoculations at 106, 107, and 108 cfu/mL resulted in control efficacies of 100%, 83.15%, and 69.90%, respectively. Genome sequencing showed that it possesses 22 gene clusters associated with the synthesis of antimicrobial metabolites and genes that are involved in the production of IAA. Furthermore, it may be able to produce spermidine and volatile compounds that also enhance plant growth and defense responses. Our results suggest that strain YXDHD1-7 prevents early blight disease by promoting growth and enhancing the defense enzyme activities in tomato plants. This strain is a promising candidate for an excellent microbial inoculant that can be used to enhance tomato production.

Characterization of a novel root-associated diazotrophic rare PGPR taxa, Aquabacter pokkalii sp. nov., isolated from pokkali rice: new insights into the plant-associated lifestyle and brackish adaptation

Salinity impacts crop growth and productivity and lowers the activities of rhizosphere microbiota. The identification and utilization of habitat-specific salinity-adapted plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are considered alternative strategies to improve the growth and yields of crops in salinity-affected coastal agricultural fields. In this study, we characterize strain L1I39T, the first Aquabacter species with PGPR traits isolated from a salt-tolerant pokkali rice cultivated in brackish environments. L1I39T is positive for 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase activity and nitrogen fixation and can promote pokkali rice growth by supplying fixed nitrogen under a nitrogen-deficient seawater condition. Importantly, enhanced plant growth and efficient root colonization were evident in L1I39T-inoculated plants grown under 20% seawater but not in zero-seawater conditions, identifying brackish conditions as a key local environmental factor critical for L1I39T-pokkali rice symbiosis. Detailed physiological studies revealed that L1I39T is well-adapted to brackish environments. In-depth genome analysis of L1I39T identified multiple gene systems contributing to its plant-associated lifestyle and brackish adaptations. The 16S rRNA-based metagenomic study identified L1I39T as an important rare PGPR taxon. Based on the polyphasic taxonomy analysis, we established strain L1I39T as a novel Aquabacter species and proposed Aquabacter pokkalii sp nov. Overall, this study provides a better understanding of a marine-adapted PGPR strain L1I39T that may perform a substantial role in host growth and health in nitrogen-poor brackish environments.

Synergistic interactions of nanoparticles and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria enhancing soil-plant systems: a multigenerational perspective

Sustainable food security and safety are major concerns on a global scale, especially in developed nations. Adverse agroclimatic conditions affect the largest agricultural-producing areas, which reduces the production of crops. Achieving sustainable food safety is challenging because of several factors, such as soil flooding/waterlogging, ultraviolet (UV) rays, acidic/sodic soil, hazardous ions, low and high temperatures, and nutritional imbalances. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are widely employed in in-vitro conditions because they are widely recognized as a more environmentally and sustainably friendly approach to increasing crop yield in contaminated and fertile soil. Conversely, the use of nanoparticles (NPs) as an amendment in the soil has recently been proposed as an economical way to enhance the texture of the soil and improving agricultural yields. Nowadays, various research experiments have combined or individually applied with the PGPR and NPs for balancing soil elements and crop yield in response to control and adverse situations, with the expectation that both additives might perform well together. According to several research findings, interactive applications significantly increase sustainable crop yields more than PGPR or NPs alone. The present review summarized the functional and mechanistic basis of the interactive role of PGPR and NPs. However, this article focused on the potential of the research direction to realize the possible interaction of PGPR and NPs at a large scale in the upcoming years.

A REVIEW: HARNESSING SALT-TOLERANT PLANT GROWTH-PROMOTING RHIZOBACTERIA FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

The salinity of the soil is becoming a major concern for the worlds food security. it is essential to create environmentally friendly sustainable techniques that boost saline soil productivity. Certain microorganisms have a dependency on salt as well as tolerance to it. Microbes that are resistant to salt may withstand ionic and osmotic stress. From very alkaline, saline, and sodic soils, many genera of salt-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (ST-PGPR) have been discovered. Numerous them are also known to help plants cope with a range of biotic and abiotic stressors. The possibility of using ST-PGPR to improve the productivity of plants under salt stress has been studied in the past several years, indicating that saline agro-ecosystems can be restored through its use. This review will focus on ST-PGPR and how they might boost saline agro-ecosystem production. Additionally, it sheds light on future research directions on the use of ST-PGPR for saline soil reclamation and PGPR-mediated mechanisms of salt tolerance in various crop plants. Plant-Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi May Improve Soil Fertility and the Growth, Nutrient Uptake, and Physiological Performance of Batavia Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia) Plants

A greenhouse experiment was realized to investigate the effects of plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on soil quality and the growth, nutrient uptake, and physiological performance of Batavia lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. longifolia). For this purpose, six fertilization treatments were applied: (i) inorganic fertilization (I.F.—control, i.e., usual/conventional fertilization), (ii) I.F. + PGPR, (iii) I.F. + PGPR + AMF, (iv) manure (MAN), (v) MAN + PGPR, and (vi) MAN + PGPR + AMF. Soil fertility was influenced by the treatments, and soil respiration (CO2 flux) was significantly increased after applications of PGPR and AMF. Following MAN fertilization in particular, an approximately sixfold higher soil respiration value was recorded following the MAN + PGPR + AMF treatment compared to the control (I.F.). Root, leaf, and total biomass dry weights were significantly affected by the PGPR and AMF applications, mainly following the I.F. treatment. In contrast, K, Mg, and Fe uptake was significantly influenced by PGPR and AMF application following the MAN treatment. The SPAD value, performance index (PI), photosynthetic rate, and stomatal conductance were significantly higher in the I.F. + PGPR + AMF-treated plants compared to the control plants. Overall, these data prove the beneficial roles of PGPR and AMF in soil quality and fertility and the nutrient uptake and physiological performance of lettuce plants. However, further clarification is needed in the near future to test the interaction effects between PGPR, AMF, and the type of fertilizer used (organic or inorganic).

Synthetic consortia of four strains promote Schisandra chinensis growth by regulating soil microbial community and improving soil fertility.

Synthetic consortia performed better in promoting Schisandra chinensis growth than individual strains, and this result provides valuable information for the development of synthetic microbial fertilizers. Schisandra chinensis is an herbal medicine that can treat numerous diseases. However, the excessive reliance on chemical fertilizers during the plantation of S. chinensis has severely restricted the development of the S. chinensis planting industry. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can promote the growth of a wide range of crops, and synthetic consortia of them are frequently superior to those of a single strain. In this study, we compared the effects of four PGPR and their synthetic consortia on S. chinensis growth. The pot experiment showed that compared with the control, synthetic consortia significantly increased the plant height, biomass, and total chlorophyll contents of S. chinensis, and their combined effects were better than those of individual strains. In addition, they improved the rhizosphere soil fertility (e.g., TC and TN contents) and enzyme activities (e.g., soil urease activity) and affected the composition and structure of soil microbial community significantly, including promoting the enrichment of beneficial microorganisms (e.g., Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobiota) and increasing the relative abundance of Proteobacteria, a dominant bacterial phylum. They also enhanced the synergistic effect between the soil microorganisms. The correlation analysis between soil physicochemical properties and microbiome revealed that soil microorganisms participated in regulating soil fertility and promoting S. chinensis growth. This study may provide a theoretical basis for the development of synthetic microbial fertilizers for S. chinensis.

Productivity and Profitability of Fodder oat (Avena sativa L.) as Affected by Integrated Nutrient Management: A Review

Fodder oats (Avena sativa L.) is a valuable feed resource for livestock, providing high-quality forage rich in nutrients essential for animal health and productivity. This review summarizes the key components and benefits of integrated nutrient management in fodder oats cultivation. Organic inputs such as farmyard manure, compost, and green manure enhance soil quality while inorganic fertilizers provide essential macro and micronutrients necessary for robust crop growth and yield.Various researchers found that higher green and dry fodder yields were obtained with the application of Farmyard Manure @ 5 t/ha + 50 percent of the recommended dose of fertilizers (329.76- 518.32 q ha-1) and 75% RDF along with 2 t Poultry manure ha-1 (77.57- 91.31 q ha-1 ). While 75% recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF)+Zn + plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR)+residual farm yard manure (R-FYM) and 100%RDF + Zn + R-FYM significantly increased fodder quality traits- Crude protein (9.44-10.10%), ether extract (4.5-5%), total ash yield (33.8-34.6%), ADF and NDF. Uptake of N, K, P, S and Mn by oat crop was highest at 75% NPK+2.5t Vermicompost +10kg Mn+20kg S ha-1. Higher net returns per ha were obtained by integrated nutrient management treatment of FYM @ 5 t/ha + 50 percent of the recommended dose of fertilizers and the application of 75% RDF (60:40 NP) kg ha-1 along with 2 t poultry manure ha-1. Thus Integrated nutrient sources increased the yield and quality of fodder oat besides enhancing profitability.

Potential of Drought Tolerant Rhizobacteria Amended with Biochar on Growth Promotion in Wheat

Drought stress is the prime obstacle for worldwide agricultural production and necessitates innovative strategies for enhancing crop resilience. This study explores the efficacy of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and biochar (BC) as sustainable amendments for mitigating the effects of drought on wheat growth. Multiple experiments were carried out on isolated strains to assess their drought tolerance potential and multiple plant growth-promoting attributes. Experiments in the laboratory and natural environment were conducted to assess the impact of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, biochar, and their synergistic application on various growth parameters of wheat. The results revealed that the drought-tolerant PGPR strains (Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus tequilensis), alongside biochar (rice husk), alleviated the phytotoxic impact of drought by increasing the root length from 17.0% to 70.0% and shoot length from 30.0% to 82.0% as compared to un-inoculated stressed controls. The total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents of the plants were substantially increased to 477% and 423%, respectively, when biochar and PGPR were applied synergistically. Significant enhancements in membrane stability index, relative water content, proline, and sugar level were achieved by combining biochar and bacterial strains, resulting in increases of 19.5%, 37.9%, 219%, and 300%, respectively. The yield of wheat in terms of plant height, spike length, number of spikelets per spike, and number of grains per spike was enhanced from 26.7% to 44.6%, 23.5% to 62.7%, 91.5% to 154%, and 137% to 182%, respectively. It was concluded that the biochar-based application of PGPR induced drought tolerance in wheat under water deficit conditions, ultimately improving the production and yield of wheat.

Halotolerant Endophytic Bacteria Regulate Growth and Field Performance of Two Durum Wheat Genotypes with Contrasting Salinity Tolerance Potential

Soil salinity hampers durum wheat plant growth and development at various stages. The detrimental effects of salinity on plant cellular and physiological processes necessitate strategies to alleviate its negative impact and improve overall crop yield. This study investigates the efficacy of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) bacteria inoculation in mitigating salinity stress on two durum wheat genotypes with contrasting degrees of salinity tolerance (Tamaroi, salt-sensitive and Line 5004, salt-tolerant) under greenhouse and field conditions. For this purpose, two halotolerant-PGPR strains, Pseudomonas jordanii strain G34 and Oceanobacillus jordanicus strain GSFE11, were utilized for the inoculation. For the greenhouse experiment, the two selected genotypes were subjected to salinity at the flag leaf stage with continuous irrigation with a Hoagland solution supplemented with 50 mM NaCl. Field experiments were conducted across two locations with contrasting salinity levels over two growing seasons. At the end of both experiments, various parameters including total weight, spike weight, grain weight, spike number, spikelet number, grains per spike and thousand kernel weight were measured. The halotolerant PGPRs, P. jordanii strain G34 and O. jordanicus strain GSFE11, proved effective in alleviating salinity-induced adverse effects and enhancing growth under greenhouse and field conditions. However, bacterial inoculation significantly improved growth in the salt-sensitive genotype and such effects were not observed in the tolerant genotype, emphasizing genotype-specific responses. Notably, inoculation with O. jordanicus increased Na+ and Ca2+ uptake in the salt-tolerant “Line 5004” without hindering growth, suggesting one of its potential mechanisms for salt tolerance. This research demonstrates the potential of halotolerant-PGPR inoculation in enhancing durum wheat production in saline environments, but also underscores the importance of understanding genotype-specific responses for tailored interventions.

Isolation, Characterization, Genome Annotation, and Evaluation of Hyaluronidase Inhibitory Activity in Secondary Metabolites of Brevibacillus sp. JNUCC 41: A Comprehensive Analysis through Molecular Docking and Molecular Dynamics Simulation

Brevibacillus sp. JNUCC 41, characterized as a plant-growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR), actively participates in lipid metabolism and biocontrol based on gene analysis. This study aimed to investigate the crucial secondary metabolites in biological metabolism; fermentation, extraction, and isolation were performed, revealing that methyl indole-3-acetate showed the best hyaluronidase (HAase) inhibitory activity (IC50: 343.9 μM). Molecular docking results further revealed that the compound forms hydrogen bonds with the residues Tyr-75 and Tyr-247 of HAase (binding energy: −6.4 kcal/mol). Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations demonstrated that the compound predominantly binds to HAase via hydrogen bonding (MM-PBSA binding energy: −24.9 kcal/mol) and exhibits good stability. The residues Tyr-247 and Tyr-202, pivotal for binding in docking, were also confirmed via MD simulations. This study suggests that methyl indole-3-acetate holds potential applications in anti-inflammatory and anti-aging treatments.

The Impact of Inoculation of Two Strains of Rhizobacteria on Radionuclide Transfer in Sesbania Grandiflora.

Transfer factors of some naturally-occurring and artificial radionuclides from an agricultural soil to rhizobacteria-treated Sesbania grandiflora, a small leguminous tree, were studied. Two plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) strains (SCR17 and PCE2) were used to carry out an agricultural experiment in pots in semi-arid region (Syria). The results showed the bacterial strain (SCR17) increased the transfer and accumulation of 238U and 40K in Sesbania grandiflora, while both bacterial strains showed no effect on the accumulation of 234Th, 226Ra, 210Po and 210Pb in the treated plants. The transfer factor of 137Cs from soil to rhizobacteria-treated Sesbania grandiflora was negligible. The values of the transfer factors of 234Th, 226Ra, 210Po and 40K were found to be within the global values, while the values of the transfer factors of 238U and 210Pb were found to be relatively higher. This study highlights the importance of using Phytoremediation by PGPR strains for radionuclides-contaminated soils. Therefore, this method is a promising technique for the restoration and rehabilitation of contaminated sites with radionuclides, as it is low cost, easy to apply, and environmentally friendly.

Study on Plant Growth Promoting Traits of PGPR Isolates From Semi-Arid Kachchh, Gujarat Under Salt Stress Conditions

Salinity is a major problem in the agricultural sector, as it turns productive agronomical land to become unproductive. Therefore, Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), that live in the plant root zone named the rhizosphere, is one of the prominent solutions to overcome this problem in an eco-friendly manner as Rhizobacteria responds to osmotic stress and support plant development. Thus, the present study was aimed to characterize various traits of the PGPR strains isolated from saline soils of Kachchh. The characterization of the traits in the presence and absence of sodium chloride was assessed including IAA production (76.97±1.68 mg/l), Ammonia production (38.59±0.19 mg/l), Siderophore production (49.21±1.83%), Phosphate solubilization (4897.73±25.53 mg/l). When assessed for the salt tolerance of the strains in the presence of NaCl between 20-50 gm/L, the strain D6 exhibited a better growth even at 5% NaCl concentration (2.047OD). Further, the effect of PGPR on the growth of V. radiata was 100% in all the experimental setup, whereas in case of B. juncea, the highest germination of 96.67% was observed only in T2 and T1+T2+T3. Further, the molecular sequencing of the strains revealed the identification of the strains as Klebsiella quasipneumoniae, Bacillus paralicheniformis and Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Combined Application of Biochar and Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria Improves Heavy Metal and Drought Stress Tolerance in Zea mays.

Plants are often exposed to multiple stresses, including heavy metals (HM) and drought, which limit the plant growth and productivity. Though biochar or plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have been widely used for alleviating HM or drought stress in plants, the study of the effects of combined treatment with biochar and PGPR under simultaneous HM and drought stress is limited. This study investigated individual and combined effects of groundnut shell biochar (GS-BC) and PGPR Bacillus pseudomycoides strain ARN7 on Zea mays growth, physiology, and HM accumulation, along with their impact on soil enzymes under HM (Ni and Zn), drought, or HM+drought stress. It was observed that even under HM+drought stress, Z. mays growth, total chlorophyll, proteins, phenolics, and relative water contents were increased in response to combined GS-BC and ARN7 treatment. Furthermore, the combined treatment positively influenced plant superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and catalase activities, while reducing electrolyte leakage and phenolics, malondialdehyde, and proline under HM, drought, or HM+drought stress. Interestingly, the combined GS-BC and ARN7 treatment decreased HM accumulation and the bioaccumulation factor in Z. mays, highlighting that the combined treatment is suitable for improving HM phytostabilization. Additionally, GS-BC increased soil enzymatic activities and ARN7 colonization irrespective of HM and drought stress. As far as we know, this study is the first to illustrate that combined biochar and PGPR treatment could lessen the adverse effects of both HM and drought, suggesting that such treatment can be used in water-deficient HM-contaminated areas to improve plant growth and reduce HM accumulation in plants.
